A Groovy ONE!

This fall we celebrated my brother and sister-in-law’s daughters first birthday! She is the epitome of a happy baby with the most infectious smile and the sweetest snuggles!

When I heard the theme would be a Groovy One for the party I knew it was going to be completely adorable. I saw the decor theme of pinks and oranges with funky 70’s flowers, rainbows, and peace signs, and I got super excited hoping to be able to contribute with some fun florals.

The answer was gladly yes! I immediately thought of Gerber daisies (one of the happiest flowers for the happiest little girl, in my opinion), so I ordered some hot pink, light pink, and orange to match the decor they already had. It was a simple friends and family celebration at home in their backyard. In typical midwest fashion, using the garage as the main hub for tables and food. To brighten up the space and spread out the flowers, I figured bud vases with a few stems would work the best.

The morning of the event I had my beautiful wholesale daisies loaded in and stopped by good old Trader Joe’s to pick up some accents and filler, and per usual got carried away. I did learn that if you buy enough flowers they let you take one of the flower buckets that they get the flowers delivered in (at least at the location I went to). This was awesome because I did forget to acquire a bucket and I really needed one.

There was something special I was also planning with the daisies. I got some tinsel iridescent curtail and some fishing line to thread through the heads of the Daisy flowers to create a fun photo backdrop. Unfortunately, it came with a lesson on flowers in the heat of summer. It was a steamy September day so the blooms in the sun wilted almost immediately, but the idea is still 10/10, execution… not so much. To get the flower heads to sit on the line as front facing as possible, I thread the line front to back through the center of the flower and then from back to front on the bottom of the center, using a small bit of tape to secure the bloom’s position on the thread.

For the table arrangements. I had never worked with bud vases before, so this was a fun challenge to see how creative I could be with my florals and color combinations to deliver a cohesive and cute look spread across the tables with only a few stems in each vessel. Not to toot my own, but I definitely think it worked out well! For each vase I tried to include one Gerber or sunflower as the focal point, one or two accents, and some greenery or stock to add a high point.

For flowers I used:

Gerber daisies in hot pink, light pink, and orange

Sunflowers (my SIL’s favorite)

Spray roses in peach and ruby pink

Mini chrysanthemum in green

Aster in deep purple

Mini carnations in a buttery yellow

Stock in a fuschia

Variegated pittosporum (greens)

Bupleurum Griffithi (greens)

This project was so much fun! I’m so glad I was able to share my love of flowers and help celebrate such a special moment in my family’s lives! I loved working collaboratively with my SIL on how she would like the celebration and playing with all the options we had with my mom at Trader Joe’s to pick the best combination.

Already looking for another opportunity to share this passion and create something beautiful for another event!
